World Hypertension Day is being observed across the globe today to raise awareness about high blood pressure and its serious health risks.
Speaking on Samaa TV, Executive Director of the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC), Professor Dr. Bilal Mohiuddin, described high blood pressure as a “silent killer.” He shared key preventative measures and health advice for the public.
“One in four individuals over the age of 40 suffers from hypertension,” stated Professor Mohiuddin. He cautioned that persistently high blood pressure can lead to heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failure.
Professor Mohiuddin emphasized that blood pressure levels exceeding 140 mmHg should be treated with medication. He noted: “Constant stress, work pressure, and obesity are major contributing factors to rising blood pressure. Among the youth, smoking and the use of vapes are leading causes of hypertension.”
“The rise in sedentary lifestyles has significantly increased the number of patients with high blood pressure. To keep blood pressure under control, at least 30 minutes of daily exercise is essential.”
He advised people to reduce their intake of salt, ghee, and cooking oil, and to avoid spicy foods.
Professor Mohiuddin also recommended a diet rich in fruits and vegetables to maintain cardiovascular health.
