Pakistan’s top javelin thrower, Arshad Nadeem, saw his medal hopes end after he failed to qualify for the top eight in the men’s javelin final at the World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo.
The Pakistani athlete’s first throw in the final was 82.73 meters, placing him seventh after the initial round. His second attempt was a foul, while his third throw measured 82.75 meters. He then committed another foul on his fourth attempt. Nadeem was unable to secure a spot in the top eight, which would have earned him three additional throws in the final, thus ending his quest for a medal.
Meanwhile, India’s defending champion Neeraj Chopra didn’t have a fairytale return to the site of his 2021 Olympic triumph. He finished eighth with a best throw of 84.03 meters, a distance well short of the 90.23 meters he achieved earlier this season.
Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago clinched his first global title since winning Olympic gold as a teenager in 2012. He won the men’s javelin final with a throw of 88.16 meters on Thursday. The 32-year-old athlete dominated the competition amid gusty winds at the National Stadium, producing the two longest throws of the evening. This victory adds a world championship medal to his 2012 Olympic gold and 2016 Rio Olympics bronze.
It was a good night for the Caribbean, as Grenada’s Anderson Peters took second place with a throw of 87.38 meters, adding a silver medal to the golds he won at the 2019 and 2022 world championships. The bronze medal went to Curtis Thompson, whose opening throw of 86.67 meters secured the first world championship medal for the United States in this event since Breaux Greer in 2007.
Sachin Yadav brought some pride back to India with a personal best of 86.27 meters on his first attempt, finishing fourth ahead of Julian Weber. The German athlete, who was another strong contender, struggled and managed only a best throw of 86.11 meters, far below his world-leading 91.51 meters from the Diamond League final in Zurich last month.
Kenya’s 36-year-old Julius Yego, the 2015 world champion, was forced to withdraw from the competition after twisting his ankle on his third attempt.
