According to police reports, a fatal accident involving a water tanker on Tuesday has tragically raised the death toll from heavy traffic accidents in Karachi this year to 138.
The most recent incident occurred near Future Mor in Landhi, where a motorcyclist, identified as Muhammad Fasih, was fatally struck by a water tanker.
Following the collision, the driver of the tanker truck immediately abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. Police promptly launched a search operation, and authorities later confirmed the driver’s arrest.
This latest incident contributes to the escalating number of fatalities from heavy vehicle accidents, highlighting a growing concern for road safety across Karachi.
A Pattern of Tragic Incidents
This event closely follows another tragic occurrence just days prior, on June 19, when a speeding sand-laden dumper truck overturned onto a car near Drigh Road. This devastating accident, which happened around 3:15 AM, resulted in the deaths of a woman and a child, and injured two others. The incident was attributed to a dangerous race between dumper trucks, which crushed the vehicle beneath its heavy load.
Previously, on May 31, five separate incidents claimed at least five lives, including a college professor. The alarming frequency of high-speed dumper truck accidents, which have caused numerous fatalities and injuries in recent months, has prompted authorities to announce various safety measures. This ongoing crisis has intensified calls for stricter enforcement of existing traffic laws and significant improvements to the city’s road infrastructure to prevent further tragedies.
In March, Additional IG Karachi Javed Alam Odho underscored the critical need for institutional collaboration to effectively manage traffic issues. He acknowledged that ongoing development projects contribute to congestion and stressed the vital role of the Transport Department in addressing these complex challenges.
