Lieutenant General (retd) Sajjad Ghani has stepped down from his role as Chairman of the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), citing personal reasons.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has forwarded his resignation to the Cabinet Division for formal approval. In an official statement, the Prime Minister lauded Sajjad Ghani’s services during his tenure, acknowledging his significant contributions to Pakistan’s water and power infrastructure development. The Prime Minister also extended his best wishes to the outgoing chairman for his future endeavors.
Sajjad Ghani, who assumed the position as the 23rd chairman of WAPDA in mid-2022, brought a distinctive blend of military and engineering expertise to the role. A distinguished alumnus of the Military College of Engineering, he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1984 and subsequently completed a Master’s in Civil Engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore.
His unique dual career as both a civil engineer and a senior military officer made him exceptionally well-suited to spearhead some of Pakistan’s most challenging infrastructure projects.
Throughout his military career, Ghani held several pivotal leadership positions. He served as Commander of the Corps of Engineers and later as Quartermaster General, overseeing large-scale construction and logistics for the armed forces. His other prominent roles included Vice Chief of General Staff at General Headquarters (GHQ) and Karachi Corps Commander.
