A by-election is being held today in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) to fill a general seat in Pakistan’s upper house of parliament, the Senate.
According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), polling began at 9 AM and will continue uninterrupted until 4 PM. The voting is taking place within the KP Assembly building. The ECP has appointed Provincial Election Commissioner Saeed Gul to serve as the Returning Officer (RO) for the election.
The contest for the Senate seat is among three candidates: Taj Muhammad Afridi, Khurram Zeeshan, and Irfan Saleem.
The KP Assembly has a total of 145 members. To secure victory in this by-election, a candidate must obtain 73 votes.
Based on the current party positions within the assembly, the government coalition holds a significant advantage with 92 members, while the opposition has 53 members.
