In a surprising move, Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has returned her Nobel Peace Prize to US President Donald Trump. After a meeting with Trump at the White House, Machado addressed the media in Spanish, saying, “I have given my medal and the Nobel Peace Prize to President Trump as a recognition of our unique bond with our freedom.” She further stated, “In my opinion, today is a historic day for Venezuela, and we can trust President Trump.”
This meeting between the leaders of the two countries comes just a few weeks after Trump’s military took action to arrest Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and charge him in a narcotics smuggling case. Trump accepted the Nobel Peace Prize that Machado had awarded him, saying in a social media post that Machado’s decision was a “beautiful gesture of mutual respect” and that their recent meeting was a “great honor.”
Trump also praised Machado, calling her an “amazing woman” who had endured a great deal. However, the Nobel Institute had previously stated that the award was final and could not be transferred to another person. Despite this, White House officials announced that Trump would be keeping the Nobel Peace Prize.
