It’s been about six weeks since the devastating tornado struck Valley View, leaving behind extensive cleanup efforts in the small Cooke County community.
Debris still lines Green Meadow Drive, a stark reminder of the E-F3 tornado’s direct impact over the Memorial Day weekend, claiming the lives of seven people, including four children.
Meanwhile, across the interstate in Southeast Valley View, Smith Farms, a cherished local sustainable farm, continues to grapple with recovery. Todd and Lisa Smith, the farm’s owners, have managed to clear 60 acres of debris, but the task remains daunting. Lisa Smith explained on Friday that recent rain has caused grass to grow over the debris, complicating cleanup efforts.
The tornado severely damaged fencing and posed a threat to their livestock, leading them to sell their cattle. Despite the challenges, they continue to operate their honey and egg business, which has become vital to many locals in the area.
Grateful for the community’s support, the Smiths have been buoyed by the volunteers who have assisted with cleanup efforts. They’re hoping for more volunteers to join them on Saturday morning from 7 a.m. to noon to help clear fields of debris. Volunteers are advised to wear work boots, pants, and sturdy gloves, with water and sports drinks provided.
In June, Cooke County Emergency Management reported that FEMA had distributed over $2.5 million to affected residents, though the Smiths haven’t qualified for assistance due to their insurance coverage, which they describe as inadequate.
Looking ahead, Lisa Smith remains optimistic but realistic about the road to recovery, estimating they still have at least six months of cleanup ahead. She emphasized that the entire community faces a long rebuilding process.
To aid those affected by the tornado, upcoming fundraisers include a July 14 outdoor event hosted by Texas country music artist Cody Jinks and Red River Station in Saint Jo. Ticket sales and proceeds from food and drinks will benefit tornado victims in Cooke and Montague Counties. Additionally, Anderson’s Eatery and Distillery in Denton plans a Valley View Tornado Relief festival on July 27, featuring music, food, raffles, and donations of essential items for those in need.
The community continues to rally together in support of Valley View’s recovery efforts.
