US Ends Lottery System for H-1B Visas, Introduces ‘Merit-Based Selection’
The United States has announced an end to the lengthy lottery system for H-1B work visas and will introduce a new ‘Merit-Based Selection’ system in its place. According to foreign media reports, the new system will prioritize foreign workers with higher salaries and advanced skills, making it more challenging for younger professionals to obtain an American visa.
The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) states that the new law will come into effect on February 27, 2026, and from the fiscal year 2027, approximately 85,000 H-1B visas will be allocated annually through this system.
Mathew T. Tragert, spokesperson for the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), stated that the current lottery system is being misused, and several American companies are hiring foreign workers at lower wages, which is affecting American workers.
Donald Trump’s administration has announced a major offer for undocumented immigrants on the occasion of Christmas. The statement issued by the Trump administration stated that this decision was made as part of ongoing measures, including a presidential decree that will require companies that obtain H-1B visas to pay an additional $100,000 per visa.
Under the new system, visas will be allocated based on salary and skill rather than a lottery, allowing for more competent and higher-paid individuals to be prioritized. According to foreign media, this year, Amazon was the largest recipient of H-1B visas, followed by Tata Consultancy Services, Microsoft, Apple, and Google. The state of California has the highest number of H-1B workers. It is worth noting that the annual limit for H-1B visas is 65,000, while an additional 20,000 visas are allocated for master’s or higher degree holders from the US.
