The United States has announced an end to the lengthy lottery system for H-1B work visas and will introduce a new ‘Merit-Based Selection’ system in its place. According to foreign media reports, the new system will prioritize foreign workers with higher salaries and advanced skills, making it more challenging for younger professionals to obtain an American visa.
The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) states that the new law will come into effect on February 27, 2026, and from the fiscal year 2027, approximately 85,000 H-1B visas will be allocated annually through this system.
Mathew T. Tragert, spokesperson for the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), stated that the current lottery system is being misused, and several American companies are hiring foreign workers at lower wages, which is affecting American workers.
