On Sunday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told CBS that the United States will keep trying to create a scenario to help end Russia’s war in Ukraine, though it might not be possible. “If peace is not going to be possible here and this is just going to continue on as a war, people will continue to die by the thousands… we may unfortunately wind up there, but we don’t want to wind up there,” Rubio said on “Face the Nation.”
On Monday, European leaders will accompany Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to meet with Donald Trump in Washington. They aim to bolster Zelensky as the US president pressures Ukraine to accept a swift peace deal following his Friday meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
“There are things that were discussed as part of this meeting that are potentials for breakthroughs, that are potential for progress,” Rubio said, adding that security guarantees for Ukraine would be among the topics of discussion. According to sources, Trump and Putin discussed a proposal for Russia to hand over small pockets of occupied Ukrainian land. In return, Ukraine would cede a strip of fortified land in the east, and the front lines would be frozen elsewhere. Rubio emphasized that both sides would need to make concessions to reach a peace deal.
