On Sunday, two individuals were killed when firefighters battling a blaze in the northwestern US state of Idaho were ambushed by an unknown number of gunmen, an incident that has evolved into an ongoing standoff, according to the local sheriff.
Sheriff Bob Norris stated at a press conference that it was not immediately clear if there was one gunman or multiple attackers. He also indicated that civilians may have been struck in the incident, which is unfolding in a nature area in Coeur d’Alene.
“We are prepared to neutralize this suspect who is currently actively shooting at public safety personnel,” Norris affirmed. ABC News reported that Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has been briefed on the Idaho shooting.
Norris explained that firefighters received the initial call about a fire around 1:21 p.m. local time. Approximately 40 minutes later, reports emerged that they were being shot at. Idaho Governor Brad Little expressed his strong condemnation on X, stating, “This is a heinous direct assault on our brave firefighters.” He added, “I ask all Idahoans to pray for them and their families as we wait to learn more.”
Little did not provide further details regarding any casualties or the precise sequence of events. He also urged the public, “As this situation is still developing, please stay clear from the area to allow law enforcement and firefighters to do their jobs.”
