In a major strategic move to strengthen its air defense capabilities, Turkey has signed a significant deal with the United Kingdom to purchase 20 advanced Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft. This agreement reflects the deepening defense relationship between the two nations.
The high-profile signing ceremony in Ankara was attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, highlighting the political and strategic importance of the deal.
Speaking at the event, President Erdogan described the agreement as more than just a military purchase, calling it “a new symbol of the strategic relationship” between the two countries.
The defense deal is reportedly valued at approximately $11 billion. According to the plan, the first delivery of these advanced jets to the Turkish air force is expected to begin in 2030.
This purchase is part of Turkey’s wider plan to modernize its air fleet, as Turkish officials have stated they intend to buy a total of 120 fighter jets.
Turkey’s Ministry of Defense also clarified that it is working to maintain its military superiority in the region, especially to strengthen its position against rivals like Israel. To achieve this, Turkey is also in talks to purchase 12 Typhoon jets each from Qatar and Oman. This agreement follows an initial deal made in July between Turkey and the UK for 40 Eurofighter aircraft.
