U.S. President Donald Trump renewed his threats of imposing tariffs on the European Union and set a Feb. 1 deadline for 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, as well as duties on China.
Trump expressed frustration over the trade surplus with the EU, calling it “very bad” and insisted that tariffs were the only way to achieve fairness. He also discussed a 10% punitive tariff on Chinese imports due to fentanyl trafficking via Mexico and Canada.
Mexico and Canada responded cautiously to Trump’s threats, with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum emphasizing Mexico’s sovereignty and independence while stating that the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade deal would not be renegotiated until 2026.
