In a stern warning, US President Donald Trump has demanded that Hamas disarm immediately as the second phase of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement gets underway. Trump’s statement on social media has made it clear that Hamas must fulfill all its commitments, including the return of Israeli soldier Ron Arad’s remains and its complete disarmament. According to a foreign news agency, Trump claims that Hamas is willing to disarm.
The US had stated that Hamas had not fully fulfilled its obligations in the first phase of the ceasefire. In the second phase, the US will work with Hamas to destroy its arms and set up an international peace force. However, Hamas maintains that it will not disarm until Israel fully withdraws from Gaza.
Despite the ceasefire, Israel continues to launch attacks on Gaza and has not withdrawn its military from the area, including from the so-called “Yellow Line” in eastern Gaza. Israel has also restricted the supply of humanitarian aid to the region.
Under the terms of the second phase of the ceasefire, a 15-member Palestinian Technocrat Committee will take over the administration of Gaza, with a “Board of Peace” overseeing the committee, which will be headed by US President Trump. Trump has emphasized the need for Hamas to disarm quickly in order for the next phase of the Gaza peace plan to proceed. Notably, Gaza is facing a severe shortage of food, water, medicine, and fuel, with the UN and aid agencies stating that Israel has not granted the necessary permission for the required amount of humanitarian aid.
