A fortunate group of individuals went home with Oscar gold.
“Anora,” the dramatic comedy by director Sean Baker, emerged as the big winner of the 97th Academy Awards, securing five awards including best picture and best actress for star Mikey Madison.
Hosted for the first time by Conan O’Brien, the Oscars ceremony concluded an award season overshadowed by January’s Los Angeles wildfires that ravaged the city and impacted many within the industry.
The show commenced with a special montage of film clips that celebrated the city, culminating in “We Love LA.” A captivating performance by “Wicked” stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo followed.
Organizers had long maintained that the show would proceed amidst the region’s recovery, despite the cancellation of the annual nominees luncheon and adjustments to nomination deadlines.
Heading into Sunday’s ceremony, the Netflix musical/crime drama hybrid “Emilia Pérez” led with 13 nominations. The Oz-set “Wicked” and “The Brutalist,” starring Adrien Brody as a Holocaust survivor and architect, followed with 10 nods each.
“The Brutalist” concluded the night with three awards, including best actor for Adrien Brody. “Wicked” earned two wins, including best production design and best costume design.
