Athens, Greece – Another devastating tragedy has struck migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea in search of safe haven. Authorities have recovered 17 bodies from a vessel that capsized near the Greek island of Crete, highlighting the extreme dangers inherent in sea routes to Europe.
According to the Hellenic Coast Guard, the boat overturned approximately 26 nautical miles southwest of the island of Crete. Local media reports indicate that the victims had gone without aid for two days after the accident occurred. The overturned vessel was initially spotted by a Turkish cargo ship, which promptly alerted Greek authorities.
Only two survivors were found in the vicinity of the wrecked boat and were immediately rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The survivors told news agencies that their boat sustained damage due to inclement weather, leaving them stranded in the sea for many hours without food or water.
This incident not only represents a tragic loss of life but once again raises serious questions for Greek and international authorities regarding the effectiveness of search and rescue operations and the protection of migrants navigating dangerous sea borders.
