A powerful explosion at a supermarket in the northern Mexican city of Hermosillo has left at least 23 people dead, casting a shadow over the country’s “Day of the Dead” festivities.
The governor of Sonora state, Alfonso Durazo, confirmed the tragic death toll, noting with sorrow that children were among the victims. In a video message, he stated that 11 injured individuals have been transferred to hospitals in Hermosillo.
According to local media, the blast ripped through the “Valdo’s” store, sparking a massive fire that trapped numerous people inside. Firefighters battled the blaze for several hours before finally getting it under control. Images from the scene show the building’s exterior walls blackened and its windows completely blown out.
Initial investigations suggest a faulty electrical transformer inside the store may have caused the deadly explosion. The prosecutor’s office is currently treating the incident as an accidental blast.
Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum, expressed her deep condolences to the families of those who died. She affirmed that the federal government would provide all necessary support to the affected families.
In light of the tragedy, authorities have canceled all “Day of the Dead” celebrations in the area and have urged the public to stay away from the site.
