Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, has witnessed a surge in demands for the restoration of the monarchy ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections in March. Thousands of protesters took to the streets, chanting slogans like “Bring Back the King.” The demonstration, led by supporters of the deposed royal family, was the largest since the protests last year.
According to foreign media reports, the deposed royal family’s supporters organized a protest rally in Kathmandu yesterday. This was the first major rally since last year’s protests, which led to the formation of an interim government. The interim government was later replaced by an announcement of new elections in March.
Despite a curfew in place in Kathmandu and other cities, protesters continued to demonstrate, setting fire to the residences of President Ram Chandra Paudel and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal. Protesters gathered around a statue of King Prithvi Narayan Shah, the founder of the Shah dynasty in the 18th century, and chanted slogans like “We love our king. Bring Back the King.”
Protesters claim that the Jan Andolan movement, which led to the downfall of the monarchy, has left Nepal without a viable alternative solution. They argue that the restoration of the monarchy is necessary to establish order in the country, given the current situation and the direction the country is heading.
It is worth noting that the Nepalese royal family still maintains significant public support. Last year, Sushila Karki, the first female Prime Minister of Nepal, a retired Supreme Court judge, took power after protests by young people. Protesters had demonstrated against corruption, lack of opportunities, unemployment, and poor governance, which began with a government announcement to ban social media for a short period.
