A resident of a Houston apartment where a SWAT situation unfolded on Monday shared her account exclusively with Eyewitness News.
The Houston Police Department’s SWAT team responded to a call at around 3:21 p.m. on Monday at the Meadowridge Condominiums in the 3900 block of Woodchase Drive, near Westpark Drive.
Jaylcia Mack recounted that upon returning from work, she found her residence surrounded by police activity. After observing the scene for a few minutes, Mack realized that all attention was focused on her front door.
The situation involved 31-year-old Samuel Babasola Johnson-Awosanya, who allegedly attempted to steal a landscaping trailer by hooking it up to his car. However, his attempt was thwarted by the trailer’s owners, who detained him until police arrived.
Awosanya fled and sought refuge in the unit he shares with his mother and Mack. While his mother eventually emerged, she refused to leave the premises. Consequently, officers carried her down the stairs, and Awosanya later exited, claiming he had been asleep.
Awosanya now faces charges of felony theft and felony evading arrest. His mother, however, will not be charged, as officers carried her out when she declined to leave voluntarily.
Mack, who resides with Awosanya’s mother to assist her at home, expressed shock over the turn of events, particularly the resistance shown by Awosanya’s mother.
Reflecting on the incident, Mack emphasized the confusion and disruption caused by the situation, highlighting her gratitude for not being present when it occurred. Additionally, she mentioned that Awosanya’s mother recently underwent knee replacement surgery and was subsequently taken to the hospital.
