HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Returning to the PGA Tour calendar with a sought-after spring slot, the Texas Children’s Houston Open is striving to attract a top-tier field of the world’s premier golfers to Memorial Park from March 28-31.
Astros Golf Foundation president, Giles Kibbe, revealed on Monday that defending champion Tony Finau has committed to playing in Houston, alongside world No. 21 Sahith Theegala. Earlier commitments include world No. 1 Scott Scheffler and Wyndham Clark, the 2023 U.S. Open champion.
Kibbe anticipates that more high-ranking players will commit as the tournament approaches its scheduled date, just two weeks prior to The Masters.
“We anticipate further player announcements in the coming days and weeks,” Kibbe stated.
Organizers are configuring the Memorial Park course to replicate conditions similar to Augusta National, featuring fast greens and greenside shots akin to the iconic venue.
Additionally, Kibbe informed ABC13 Sports that spectators will notice alterations to the golf course. The 17th hole has been modified to create more of a “risk-reward” scenario for the Sunday finale.
Furthermore, adjustments have been made to the green on the par-four 15th hole to accommodate more tee shots that can roll onto the putting surface, potentially allowing players to pursue eagles, or two shots under par, for more thrilling conclusions.
The grandstands at the 15th hole have been designated as “the place to be” for tournament week, offering increased seating capacity this year.
Kibbe emphasized the desire for local fans to enjoy themselves responsibly, citing the need to avoid excesses akin to those witnessed at the Phoenix Open, where over 50 fans were arrested in alcohol-related incidents.
“We haven’t encountered such issues previously,” Kibbe noted. “We aim to enhance that area, maintaining a respectable atmosphere while ensuring plenty of enjoyment.”
Fans can also look forward to a new barbecue cookoff area and a watch party arranged for Astros opening day. The Houston Open’s first round kicks off in the morning on March 28, followed by the Astros facing the Yankees at 3 p.m. Spectators are encouraged to remain at Memorial Park and watch the game on large screens as the Astros embark on a new season.
