Thailand’s renowned street food known as ‘dancing shrimp’ has ignited a debate among culinary enthusiasts and critics. The dish, made with live freshwater shrimp that leap around as diners try to eat, has gained fame, especially in northern Thailand.
Locally called ‘Goong Ten’, this dish features live shrimp mixed with a zesty combination of crushed chilies, lime juice, fish sauce, mint, sliced shallots, and lemongrass. It is often accompanied by sticky rice and is celebrated as one of the freshest delicacies in Thai cuisine.
While the novelty of consuming live shrimp appeals to many, others have raised ethical concerns. Some critics find the shrimp’s movements and the splashes of spice during eating off-putting, with a few labeling the meal as “barbaric.”
Despite the controversy, ‘dancing shrimp’ remains a favored choice among both locals and tourists, reflecting Thailand’s vibrant street food culture.
