Ted Mann, the celebrated writer and producer known for his work on the series Deadwood and NYPD Blue, has passed away at the age of 72. The Emmy-winning writer died on Thursday, September 4, at St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica.
His daughter, Lucy Bujold, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that his death was the result of a battle with lung cancer.
Over his decades-long career in the entertainment industry, Mann wrote and produced numerous television shows. Born in 1952, he began his writing journey in the 1970s, transitioning into television by writing for the 1979 projects Delta House and Disco Beaver from Outer Space.
In the mid-1980s, Mann wrote the screenplay for the film O.C. and Stiggs and contributed episodes to hit series like The Street, Miami Vice, and Slimer! and the Real Ghostbusters. In the 1990s, he partnered with David Milch and Steven Bochco to produce the series NYPD Blue, for which he wrote two seasons. The show went on to win an Emmy for Best Drama Series.
In 2004, Mann reunited with David Milch to serve as a writer for HBO’s Deadwood, a series that earned a WGA Award for Best Dramatic Series. His other writing credits include Millennium, Judging Amy, Crash, Magic City, Hatfields & McCoys, and Skin.
