Pakistan’s Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has reported a significant 17.6% increase in income tax return filers for the year 2025, a sign seen as growing public confidence in the economic system.
According to a statement from the FBR, a total of 5.9 million (59 lakh) tax returns were filed by the October 31, 2025 deadline. This is a substantial jump from the 5 million (50 lakh) returns filed during the same period last year.
The data also revealed an 18.6% increase in the number of individuals who not only filed but also paid their taxes with their returns, with 3.6 million (36 lakh) taxpayers doing so.
This surge has had a positive impact on the national treasury. Individual taxpayers contributed 69 billion rupees this year, a clear increase of 9 billion rupees compared to the 60 billion rupees paid last year.
The FBR firmly stated that, following directives from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, no general extension on the filing deadline was granted. However, the statement noted that taxpayers facing genuine difficulties can still seek individual extensions by contacting their respective field formation.
