The international community has voiced strong condemnation following a deadly stabbing rampage at Westfield Bondi Junction in Sydney, Australia. The April 13 incident, which occurred on the eve of the Jewish holiday of Passover, prompted immediate reactions from global leaders, with a significant focus on potential antisemitic motives.
US Senator Marco Rubio vehemently condemned the attack, stating on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that the United States “condemns this terrorist attack in Australia, which targeted a Jewish festival.” He emphasized that “there is no place for antisemitism in the world,” extending prayers to the victims, the Jewish community, and the people of Australia.
The attack resulted in the deaths of six civilians, with twelve others sustaining injuries, before the lone assailant, Joel Cauchi, was fatally shot by police. Australian Home Affairs Minister confirmed details regarding the attacker’s background, noting that Cauchi’s father had arrived in Australia on a student visa, and Cauchi himself was born in the country.
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed sorrow over the incident, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterized the attack as “brutal.” The global outpouring of condolences underscores the shock and concern generated by the violence.
Authorities concluded their search for additional suspects following the confirmation of a single attacker. The focus now remains on supporting the victims and their families and understanding the full scope of the tragedy.
