Residents of Godstone, Surrey, were forced to evacuate their homes after a huge sinkhole suddenly appeared in the middle of the street, causing major destruction and safety concerns.
According to The Guardian, the sinkhole first emerged on Godstone High Street on Monday night, February 17, 2025, and by Tuesday afternoon, it had expanded to 20 meters (65 ft), swallowing a garden and disrupting water supplies.
Authorities evacuated residents from William Way, Godstone, within a 100-meter cordon, fearing an exposed cable explosion. Police urged people to leave immediately, citing risks of fire and collapse.
Residents Express Shock and Uncertainty
One affected resident, Josh Neame, who had just moved into the area a week ago, expressed his frustration and concern:
“My life is still in boxes. I don’t know what’s next because no one has any answers. They said it could take a week before we return. There’s still a risk of explosion, fire, and further collapse.”
Another family, Rez Mira and his relatives, were horrified when they returned from a visit to Croydon, only to find their entire back garden had been swallowed by the sinkhole.
Authorities Warn of Delayed Repairs
Local authorities have stated that repairing the road and infrastructure will take considerable time. Residents are urged to remain cautious as experts assess the situation.
