In a recent development, the Supreme Court of Pakistan, led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, convened a monthly reform action plan meeting to review death penalty appeals and jail petitions. The meeting was attended by the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, Secretary, and other relevant officials.
According to a statement, the Supreme Court announced that the case categorization process will be completed within two months, while the bar coding system for tracking case files will be completed within the next 15 days. The meeting also reviewed death penalty appeals and jail petitions.
When Chief Justice Afridi took office, there were 384 death penalty appeals pending on October 26, 2024, which reduced to 107. Between October 26, 2024, and now, 172 new appeals have been filed, and 449 appeals have been disposed of. The meeting decided that all pending death penalty appeals will be decided within the next 45 days.
When Chief Justice Afridi took office, there were 4,160 jail petitions pending. However, after disposing of death penalty appeals, the timeline for jail petitions will be determined. The meeting also decided that jail petitions for prisoners over 80 years old will be given priority.
The Chief Justice of Pakistan expressed gratitude to the Bar for their efforts in digitizing court records on a large scale. Mustafa Kamal, a senior politician, criticized the Sindh government, saying that every Chief Minister of Punjab has favored Lahore, while the Chief Minister of Sindh has not favored Karachi. He further stated that he has lost hope in the People’s Party and questioned whether corruption and bribery were not prevalent in Sindh.
