In 2023, Nintendo achieved massive success with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which went on to become the third-highest-grossing animated film of all time.
Now, it appears the company is looking to expand the franchise, especially with The Legend of Zelda already slated for an upcoming release. Eagle-eyed observers on ResetEra, a prominent gaming news forum, noted that Universal Pictures and Nintendo have filed a registration with the U.S. Copyright Public Records System for a film titled ‘Untitled Donkey Kong Project; Motion picture’.
This revelation gains further intrigue given an earlier statement by Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, who hinted at broadening “the number of people who have access to Nintendo IP,” specifically mentioning that “visual content is one such area.”
Donkey Kong first appeared in Super Mario Bros. with Seth Rogen voicing the character. However, it remains uncertain whether Rogen will reprise his role in the character’s standalone sequel, which is currently in development. Additionally, Nintendo is set to launch Donkey Kong Bananza on July 17, further boosting the character’s presence within the video game franchise.
