Across the country, a wave of inflation has made life more difficult for the common person, with a sharp increase in sugar prices adding a significant burden to households. The latest data released by the Bureau of Statistics paints a worrying picture, showing that the price per kilo of sugar has reached a peak of 210 PKR in some parts of the nation.
According to the report, the city of Sargodha saw a staggering increase of 23 PKR per kilo in just one week. In major cities like Karachi and Hyderabad, the price also rose by 5 PKR per kilo.
Currently, sugar is being sold for 200 PKR per kilo in both Karachi and Sargodha. The twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi also recorded a maximum price of 200 PKR per kilo. Similarly, in Hyderabad, the price of sugar increased from 190 PKR to 195 PKR per kilo.
Interestingly, the Bureau of Statistics also noted a minor decrease of 12 paisas in the average national price of sugar last week, bringing the new average to 188.69 PKR. However, this slight drop in the average price has done little to ease the burden of the much higher maximum prices consumers are facing in the market.
The difference is stark when comparing the situation to last year. Exactly one year ago, the average price of sugar in the country was 132.47 PKR per kilo, highlighting the rapid rise in the cost of this basic necessity.
