Despite repeated government claims, the ‘sugar mafia’ in Pakistan appears to remain beyond control, as sugar prices continue their relentless climb. Over the past month alone, the price per kilogram has surged by a staggering 15 to 20 rupees across the country.
In major cities, sugar is fast moving out of the common person’s reach. According to a private TV report, the price in Lahore has hit a high of 200 PKR per kg, a sharp increase from 179 PKR last month. Similarly, in Multan, the price jumped from 185 PKR to 200 PKR.
The situation is no different in the country’s largest city, Karachi, where sugar is now being sold for 195 to 200 PKR, up from 190 PKR. Quetta has seen a similar hike, with prices reaching the 195-200 PKR range.
Other cities reflect the same troubling trend: Faisalabad saw prices rise from 185 PKR to 200 PKR, Peshawar from 190 to 195 PKR, and the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad are selling sugar between 185 and 190 PKR, adding to the severe financial burden on the public.
