Spring has sprung, bringing with it a fresh bouquet of new films to your local cinemas. While it’s not quite summer blockbuster season, this spring’s movie lineup is packed with exciting titles. Here’s a peek at some of the standout films hitting theaters between now and Memorial Day:
‘Death of a Unicorn’ (March 28)
Starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega, this movie is a thrilling and often hilarious genre blend, mixing fantastical mystery, creature feature, and gore. With nods to classics like “Aliens,” “E.T.” and “Jurassic Park,” “Unicorn” promises a wild ride, thanks to a scene-stealing Will Poulter.
‘The Friend’ (April 4)
Dealing with a different kind of beast, “The Friend” features Naomi Watts as a writer who inherits her late mentor’s (Bill Murray) massive dog. The trailer hints at a heartwarming story about the bond between humans and their best friends, based on Sigrid Nunez’s novel.
‘Drop’ (April 11)
In the vein of “Red Eye,” this sleek thriller puts an unsuspecting woman (Meghann Fahy of “White Lotus” fame) in danger during a date with a handsome suitor (Brandon Sklenar from “It Ends with Us”). Using modern smartphone technology as a key plot point, “Drop” promises plenty of twists and turns.
‘Warfare’ (April 11)
Written and directed by Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland (“Civil War”), “Warfare” is a raw, real-time account of a Navy SEAL platoon in combat within an Iraqi home. The trailer suggests this one is intense.
