Film director Spike Lee appears to be signaling a farewell to his working relationship with Denzel Washington.
Speaking at a Cannes press conference for his new film, Highest 2 Lowest, on Tuesday, May 20, the 68-year-old American film director discussed working with Washington for what might be the last time since their 2006 movie, Inside Man.
Lee, who has collaborated with Washington on films such as Malcolm X, He Got Game, and Mo’ Better Blues, remarked, “Denzel and I didn’t know that our previous film, Inside Man, was 18 years ago. We were surprised because it felt like yesterday. But we didn’t miss a step.”
He added concerning his partnership with the Oscar-winning actor, “I think this is it — five. He’s been talking about retirement, even though he’s just done another deal. Five films together, they stand up.”
For those unaware, Washington, who portrays the character of David King in Lee’s upcoming film, received an honorary Palme d’Or prior to the premiere screening of Highest 2 Lowest last night.
It is relevant to note that Highest 2 Lowest is slated for theatrical release under the A24 banner on August 22, 2025. Subsequently, it will become available on Apple TV+ on September 5, 2025.
