Netflix’s ‘Adolescence’ has generated a significant backlash on social media due to its sensitive social themes.
Among those reacting is Elon Musk, who amplified a post on X accusing the show’s co-creator, Jack Thorne, of “anti-white propaganda.”
The post alleged that the creator “race-swapped the actual killer from a black man/migrant to a white boy, and the story portrays him as being radicalized online by the red pill movement.”
Musk, addressing his nearly 220 million followers, simply wrote “Wow” under the post.
Thorne, in response, stated on The News Agents podcast, “We’re not making a point about race with this. We’re making a point about masculinity. We’re trying to get inside a problem. We’re not saying this is one thing or another. We’re saying this is about boys.”
According to Deadline, the series focuses on the online radicalization of young boys, rather than a specific real-life crime.
“The big question was, why is violence from young men or boys towards young women or girls increasing? Why is this happening?” Thorne previously told the outlet.
“Looking into it and attempting to pose that question as thoroughly as possible, without providing easy answers, was the goal that Stephen [Graham] and I set out on years ago,” he continued.
“I hope what we’ve done is shed light on an area that has been discussed but not examined,” Thorne concluded. “This is an issue that everyone is aware of, but exploring it through Jamie is something we’ve aimed to capture. The fact that people are eager to watch and understand Jamie, and attempt to understand the issue through him, is rewarding.”
