### Global Filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy Issues Urgent Call for Film Funds to Save Pakistani Cinema
Oscar and Emmy-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has delivered a fiery critique of the state of the Pakistani film industry, strongly advocating for the immediate establishment of dedicated film funds to stem its decline.
Speaking to the media at the British Consulate in Karachi, the globally recognized director emphasized that a robust film industry is the lifeblood of any nation. Obaid-Chinoy, known for her candidness, began by embracing her reputation, stating, “Everyone knows I am a dynamo, which is why I call myself a ‘pataakha’ (firecracker).”
Her primary focus was the necessity of financial infrastructure. She pointed to alarming trends, noting, “Cinemas in Pakistan are closing down; very few remain. When a filmmaker knows they will incur a loss from the very first day, why would they choose to make a film?”
The director drew a sharp comparison with regional cinema, citing Iran as an example of successful state support. “A country like Iran, despite countless restrictions, continues to advance its film industry and wins international awards every year. We must acknowledge this failure and act.”
Obaid-Chinoy insisted that the most critical measure required is the immediate establishment of film funds to support production and distribution.
Reflecting on her commitment to Pakistan, the director shared a personal anecdote, recalling her grandfather, who was one of the 1947 migrants (Muhajirs) who chose Pakistan. “My grandfather used to say he helped lay the foundation of this country. People only leave their home when they intend to build a new one. For me, that was a message that we must struggle every day.”
She concluded by reaffirming her dedication to national development: “I have been working in this country for 20 years. Everyone knows I do not panic. I will continue to work for my nation.”
