Australia has witnessed a spate of shark attacks in recent days, leading to the closure of several beaches in the region. The latest incident occurred on Tuesday morning at Point Plomer, New South Wales, where a 39-year-old surfer was attacked by a shark while surfing near a national park campsite. According to local health authorities, the victim suffered minor injuries and was immediately taken to the hospital.
This incident comes after a series of shark attacks in the Sydney and surrounding coastal areas over the weekend, which prompted police, lifeguards, and marine authorities to issue warnings that the ocean conditions remained hazardous due to recent heavy rainfall.
Stephen Piercy, CEO of Surf Life Saving, a organization promoting safe beach activities, advised people to avoid swimming and surfing in most areas of the coast as the water quality was not safe.
In the past three days, a 12-year-old boy was severely injured in a shark attack in Sydney’s Nelson Park on Sunday, a 11-year-old surfer narrowly escaped a shark attack in Northern Beaches on Monday, and a 27-year-old man was attacked by a shark while surfing at Manly Beach, but was taken to the hospital in a critical condition.
Following the series of shark attacks, the Northern Beaches Council closed all beaches in the area until at least Thursday.
