- Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has lauded Virat Kohli, the iconic Indian batsman, following his retirement from Test cricket, acknowledging his significant contribution to the game’s longest format.
- Taking to Instagram, Afridi wrote: “Congratulations on a remarkable career @imVkohli. Your passion, intensity, and professionalism established new benchmarks in Test cricket.”
- “The purest form of the game will miss your presence and competitive spirit,” he added.
- Afridi’s message came in response to Kohli’s announcement that he would be stepping away from Test cricket. The 36-year-old Indian batter, who made his debut in 2011, concludes his red-ball career with 9,230 runs and 30 centuries across 123 matches, maintaining an average of 46.85.
- Kohli confirmed his decision via Instagram, describing Test cricket as a format that tested and shaped him. “It’s not easy — but it feels right,” he wrote. “There’s something deeply personal about playing in whites. The quiet grind, the long days, the small moments that no one sees but that stay with you forever.”
- The Indian stalwart’s final Test match was against Australia in January, marking the end of a glittering career in which he also became India’s most successful Test captain.
- Kohli led his side in 68 matches, securing 40 victories and suffering only 17 defeats, while also guiding the team to the finals of the 2021 and 2023 World Test Championships.
- India’s next Test assignment is a five-match series against England, commencing on June 20th.
