The National Cybercrime Investigation Agency has filed a case against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Dr. Shahbaz Gill under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), following a complaint submitted by former Lahore Police inspector Mazhar Iqbal.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the case was initiated after an inquiry into social media posts allegedly made by Shahbaz Gill, in which he reportedly leveled “insulting, defamatory, and baseless allegations” against the former police officer.
Inspector Iqbal’s complaint alleges that Dr. Gill utilized his social media platforms to disseminate misleading and derogatory content concerning his character and conduct, which not only harmed his reputation but also defamed his family.
The FIR further states that the content shared by the PTI leader incited public misunderstanding and was intended to malign the complainant’s personal and professional image. In addition to seeking legal action, the plaintiff has also requested the removal of the objectionable material from social media platforms.
Upon completing its preliminary investigation, the National Cybercrime Investigation Agency concluded that sufficient grounds existed to proceed with formal charges under the provisions of PECA.
