Maulana Khan Zaib, a prominent leader of the Awami National Party (ANP), was killed in a targeted firing incident by unidentified assailants near Shandai Mor, close to the Khar Tehsil Headquarters in Bajaur.
The attack also resulted in the death of his companion, Dr. Tariq, while three other individuals sustained serious injuries.
According to sources, Zaib was actively campaigning for the upcoming Aman Pason rally, scheduled for July 13 in Bajaur, when the incident occurred.
Police have initiated an investigation into the matter, and the injured were promptly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
ANP Announces Three-Day Mourning Period
The ANP has declared three days of mourning following the “martyrdom” of Maulana Khan Zaib.
Provincial President Mian Iftikhar Hussain condemned the attack, stating, “It is not merely an assault on ANP but on Pashtun awareness, peace, and the politics of resistance.”
He further remarked that the attack suggests terrorists have once again been given free rein in the region.
During the three-day mourning period, all political activities will remain suspended, he added.
