Weeks after Cross Timbers Church in Argyle saw its lead pastor step down amid allegations of troubling behavior with women, Executive Pastor Byron Copeland has announced his resignation.
On Monday, August 12, Copeland informed church leaders and the congregation of his decision to step down from his role. In a heartfelt letter to the church community, Copeland expressed his gratitude and some sadness about his departure.
“I write with a grateful heart and a touch of sadness. I have felt the weight of recent challenges at Cross Timbers Church, but I am grateful for this place of healing and hope. With Toby Slough’s return to guide the church, I am confident and optimistic about its future,” Copeland wrote.
He acknowledged the difficulties faced but noted the positive impact of working with the staff and congregation. “This period has been tough, but working with the staff has enriched my life. I’ve met many wonderful people who have inspired my faith.”
Copeland stated that he felt called to a new chapter in his life. “So, with gratitude, I have decided to resign. I am confident that the congregation is in capable hands with the Cross Timbers Elders and Staff. I believe the church’s best days are yet to come and wish all the best for Cross Timbers Church.”
Church officials praised Copeland as a strong leader during a challenging time and supported his decision to resign to focus on his family. His departure follows that of former Senior Pastor Josiah Anthony, who was asked to resign due to “inappropriate and hurtful actions.”
According to a letter sent to the congregation and obtained by NBC 5, Anthony’s resignation did not involve physical or sexual misconduct with children. However, subsequent communications revealed that Anthony had been accused of sending sexually explicit messages to multiple women via text and social media.
Anthony joined Cross Timbers Church in 2014 as a student pastor and rose to the senior pastor position in March 2022. Following his departure, the church appointed founder Toby Slough as interim lead pastor while searching for a permanent replacement.
