The director of the Scream series recently shared his thoughts on the exits of Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera from the film franchise.
In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Kevin Williamson discussed his initial reaction to Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera’s departure from the popular horror series.
He recalled his immediate internal question: “It was sort of, ‘Well, what’s going to happen?'”
“After we no longer had Melissa and Jenna, and it seemed unlikely we would see the Carpenter sisters in a third movie, it was somewhat disheartening. It felt like, ‘What do we do next?'” he elaborated.
However, the filmmaker revealed that he, along with writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, conceived the notion of bringing back Neve Campbell to reprise her iconic role as Sidney Prescott for the forthcoming installment.
“And then this concept to reintroduce Sidney Prescott – and not just bring her back, but to center the narrative on her character, to delve into who she is in the present day – that became genuinely thrilling for me. And I believe others also found it quite exciting,” he continued.
Kevin recounted, “And then they commenced writing a screenplay. Jamie, along with Guy Busick, devised this fantastic storyline, and as they began drafting the script, it truly developed a life of its own.”
In conclusion, he stated, “Subsequently, Neve read the material and heard the pitch, and she agreed to participate. And I was still just the executive producer, merely observing from the sidelines.”
