London — A significant scientific advancement in the treatment of Chronic Constipation has emerged in the world of medicine with the publication of the first official dietary guidelines. The research remarkably reveals that the daily consumption of kiwifruit proves highly effective in significantly improving bowel function.
These new guidelines were developed by experts at King’s College London in the UK and endorsed by the British Dietetic Association. The principles are structured for adults afflicted by this painful disorder, which affects approximately one in six adults globally.
Core Findings of the Study:
The new study, published simultaneously in two international journals, analyzed data from 75 clinical trials.
- The Kiwi Effect: The study clearly disclosed that individuals suffering from chronic constipation who consumed two to three kiwifruit daily for four weeks experienced a marked improvement in their bowel movements and digestive system health.
- Challenging Traditional Advice: The researchers directly challenged traditional, generalized medical advice, such as “just eat more fibre.” The study concluded that simply increasing fibre intake is insufficient; rather, the selection of fibre sources is critical. Some popular home remedies were also deemed ineffective.
Expert Commentary:
Dr. Eirini Dimidi, Reader in Nutritional Sciences at King’s College London and lead author of the study, stated:
“Chronic constipation can severely impact a person’s daily life. For the first time, we have provided clear guidance on which foods can actually help and which advice is merely guesswork.”
Experts suggest that these new guidelines will enable doctors, nurses, and dietitians to provide patients with specific and effective advice tailored to their symptoms (such as stool volume, consistency, or straining), rather than offering a one-size-fits-all recommendation.
