Islamabad United opener Sahibzada Farhan has set his sights on a return to the Pakistan national team and envisions a long-term international career, relying on his impressive form in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and National T20 Cup to force his way back into national contention.
In an exclusive interview with Geo News, the 29-year-old batsman emphasized his ambition to secure a stable position within the national side rather than a fleeting opportunity. “My goal is to play for Pakistan again and stay in the team for the long term, not just for one or two matches,” Farhan stated. “When I return, I aim to solidify my place, not just make a brief appearance.”
Farhan attributed his dominant performances in the recent National T20 Cup, where he smashed three centuries and two half-centuries, to building his confidence ahead of the PSL. “Scoring a century early in the National T20 provided a significant boost to my confidence,” he said. “I had planned to dominate that tournament to attract attention for PSL selection, and thankfully, that form has carried forward.”
Farhan was initially overlooked by PSL franchises during the player draft held in January. Subsequently, he amassed 605 runs in just 7 innings in the National T20 tournament. His stellar performances, including three centuries and two half-centuries, ultimately convinced Islamabad United to pick Sahibzada Farhan in the supplementary category.
Farhan believes his consistency in the PSL should silence critics who previously labeled him a “domestic-only” performer. “People used to say that I only score runs in domestic cricket, but I have proven them wrong in the PSL,” Farhan asserted. “Performing in such a high-profile league significantly strengthens my case for international selection.”
Farhan highlighted the crucial role of PSL performances in facilitating the transition to international cricket. “The level of competition here is intense, and facing top-quality bowlers in the PSL prepares you for the pressures of playing for Pakistan in international cricket,” he explained. “If you perform well here, it becomes easier to adjust at the international level.”
He also acknowledged the fierce competition for opening slots in Pakistan’s batting lineup. “There are many talented openers, so consistent performances are essential to earn and retain your spot,” he said. “A player should not be judged after just two or three games; they need a proper run of matches to prove their capabilities.”
Farhan credited the Islamabad United management, particularly captain Salman Agha, for their support in refining his technique. “After the first match, Salman provided me with valuable tips that helped improve my balance and my play on the on-side,” he revealed. “Now I am scoring more freely in that area.”
He also acknowledged the contributions of his academy coaches in his evolution as a batsman. “Small adjustments can make a significant difference, and I am constantly working to improve my game,” he said.
Farhan, known for his aggressive stroke play, emphasized that he is never satisfied with just a couple of good innings. “I cannot afford to relax after one or two good performances; I always strive for more,” he stated. “My aim is to score at least one or two more centuries in this PSL season to break the record for the most T20 centuries in a calendar year and contribute to my team’s victory.”
Reflecting on the challenges of T20 batting, he underscored the importance of adaptability. “In T20 cricket, your batting position is very significant—I prefer opening because it gives me time to build an innings. In both ODIs and T20s, you have more time to adjust, but you still need to maintain a proactive approach.”
Farhan admitted that international cricket comes with intense scrutiny but affirmed his readiness for the challenge. “There is a lot of pressure at the highest level, but I have learned to embrace it,” he said. “My mindset is simple: control what you can, work hard, and let your performances speak for themselves.”
With Islamabad United continuing their strong performance in PSL X, Farhan remains determined to maintain his current form. “I am enjoying my batting right now, and I want to continue contributing to the team’s success. If I keep performing consistently, the rest will naturally follow.”
