KYIV: Russia launched multiple waves of missile and drone attacks overnight, targeting Kyiv and other areas, according to Ukraine’s military. This follows Moscow’s largest assault of the war on Monday.
In Kryvyi Rih, a civilian object was “wiped out” in the attack, resulting in at least one death, regional officials reported. Kyiv’s air defense systems were activated several times to intercept incoming missiles and drones, with witnesses reporting at least three rounds of explosions in the capital.
On Monday, Russia fired over 200 missiles and drones, killing at least seven people and damaging critical energy infrastructure. U.S. President Joe Biden condemned the assault as “outrageous.”
The scale of Tuesday’s attacks remains unclear, but Ukraine’s air force noted the launch of several drone groups and the deployment of Tu-95 strategic bombers and MiG-31 interceptors from Russian airfields. Reports have not been independently verified, and Russia has not commented on the latest developments.
The Kremlin continues to deny targeting civilians in the conflict, which began with a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The Russian defense ministry claimed that Monday’s strikes successfully hit all intended targets related to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
Kryvyi Rih, Kyiv, and other central and eastern Ukrainian regions were under air raid alerts for most of the night, starting around 2000 GMT on Monday. Kryvyi Rih’s military administration reported that five civilians might still be trapped under rubble and four others were injured. “The news is bad,” said Oleksandr Vilkul, head of Kryvyi Rih’s military administration.
