PTI lawmakers protest against bills; uproar overshadows proceedings
ISLAMABAD: Amid an uproar caused by opposition lawmakers, the government successfully passed four bills during the joint session of parliament. PTI lawmakers entered the house holding protest placards and chanting slogans such as “PECA Act unacceptable” and “oppression of journalists unacceptable.”
Journalists, protesting against the recent amendments to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), wore black armbands during the session.
Opposition Leader Omar Ayub’s request to speak on a point of order was rejected by NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, prompting opposition lawmakers to stand, shout slogans, and tear up copies of the legislative agenda.
The government managed to pass the following four bills:
- Trade Organisations (Amendment) Bill 2021
- Imports and Exports Regulatory (Amendment) Bill 2023
- National Institute of Technology Bill 2024
- National Excellence Institute Bill 2024
However, four bills, including the National Commission for Human Development (Amendment) Bill 2023, were deferred.
The session lasted just 18 minutes, and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari arrived after it had concluded.
After the session, opposition leaders staged a protest in the parliament corridors. PTI leaders Ayub, Asad Qaiser, Barrister Gohar Khan, and Shibli Faraz participated, chanting slogans against the PECA amendments.
Speaking to the media, Shibli Faraz criticized the PECA amendments, calling them oppressive. “These laws aim to suppress freedom of expression,” he remarked, sarcastically adding, “Soon, even breathing might be regulated.”
Omar Ayub voiced his support for journalists, declaring his readiness to sacrifice for their cause. He strongly opposed the PECA amendments, warning that the laws could be used as tools against individuals.
The lower house has been witnessing chaotic proceedings lately, with opposition lawmakers causing disruptions through slogans and protests, further intensifying political tensions.
