In a distressing incident, robbers snatched over PKR 200,000 cash from the mother of Pakistan’s right-arm pacer Hasan Ali in Gujranwala while she was en route to the market.
Ali’s brother, Khurram, informed the media that two men on a motorcycle carried out the dacoity, snatching his mother’s purse containing PKR 230,000 and fleeing the scene.
Police have confirmed that a manhunt has been launched, and they anticipate the culprits will be arrested shortly.
Earlier this month, Gujranwala police had reported a significant reduction in serious property crimes, attributing the decline to a robust crackdown on organized gangs in recent months.
Data from the Punjab Safe Cities Authority indicates that Pucar-15 calls received in the first four months of 2025 showed a 47% drop in shop robbery incidents compared to the same period in 2024.
Other property-related crimes also experienced notable decreases: shop dacoity by 20%, house robbery by 29%, shop burglary by 11%, and car theft by 14%, as reported by The News.
The CPO Gujranwala credited these positive trends to the relentless efforts of the Gujranwala police, particularly the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA), which successfully dismantled numerous inter-district gangs.
From January to April 2025, police arrested 290 members from 113 gangs, recovering stolen property valued at PKR 70.7 million. Total recoveries in property crime cases during this period amounted to PKR 128.8 million.
