A resolution has been officially submitted to the Sindh Assembly calling for an increase in the current speed limit on Shara-e-Faisal, one of Karachi’s most critical and high-traffic road arteries. This political move follows public discourse sparked by the recent enforcement of a strict speed limit via the new e-challan system.
The resolution, put forth by MQM Members of Provincial Assembly (MPAs) Syed Usman and Naseer Ahmed, proposes raising the speed limit from the current 60 kilometers per hour to 80 kilometers per hour.
MPA Syed Usman justified the proposal by arguing that the existing limit on such an intensely busy highway is unnecessarily restrictive. He stated that increasing the speed limit is “indispensable” to facilitate smoother and more efficient traffic movement across the city.
Crucially, the resolution emphasizes a commitment to public safety, recommending that the change should only be implemented after thorough consultation with traffic experts and securing all necessary safety measures. The current 60 km/h limit for vehicles like cars and jeeps was reinforced with signage following the introduction of electronic ticketing, making its rigidity a point of contention among Karachi commuters.
