HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A damaged section of road in the Museum District is finally being repaired after a Houston resident contacted for assistance. The issue, located in the 1600 block of Wheeler, had been causing flat tires and car damage for “about a week,” according to resident Daniel Walter.
Walter described the problem as a stretch of broken concrete spanning the entire street, which he could hear from his balcony as vehicles hit the rough patch.
“You hear tires popping throughout the day, unfortunately,” he said.
Another local, Toyin Adewole, mentioned that the uneven street had damaged one of her hubcaps.
“I didn’t realize it was that deep,” she recalled about her first encounter with the damaged area.
In response to the hazard, three large barrels were placed along the broken concrete to warn drivers. However, Walter noted that these barrels were not put up by any official authority.
“I think a homeowner put this one there,” he said, pointing to one barrel. “I put the other two up just to warn people.”
The City of Houston clarified that the damage resulted from a project by a developer connecting a new development to city water lines, not from city work. According to a city public works department spokesperson, the developer’s permit required them to restore the road to its original condition.
Repairs to the damaged street began on Thursday afternoon, shortly after initial report on the issue aired at 3 p.m.
