BEIJING, China—China has formally responded to the escalating tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, urging the two neighbors to stabilize their relationship to ensure peace in the region. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs categorized both Pakistan and Afghanistan as “traditional friends.”
The Spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry expressed optimism that Pakistan and Afghanistan will continue to resolve their disputes through dialogue and diplomatic means. This statement reflects Beijing’s close monitoring of the political friction and border instability caused by mutual mistrust between the two crucial South Asian nations.
“We hope that both countries will reduce tensions and keep the region peaceful and stable,” the Spokesperson stated. This clear message highlights China’s self-interest in de-escalation, given its shared border with Afghanistan and its massive infrastructure investment in Pakistan (CPEC).
The Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson also announced that China is prepared to play a constructive role, alongside the international community, to improve and normalize the relationship between Pakistan and Afghanistan. This offer underscores Beijing’s growing aspiration to act as a regional mediator in South Asia.
