Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has issued a strong and unequivocal message to the interim government in Afghanistan, warning that lasting peace and stability in the region will not be possible if they continue to support the outlawed Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The Prime Minister delivered the remarks during the inaugural ceremony of the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers Conference in Islamabad, emphasizing that regional security is the bedrock of development.
Peace and Security as Foundations for Growth
Addressing the international gathering of parliamentary leaders, Prime Minister Sharif expressed pride in hosting the platform focused on peace, security, and development. He stressed that peace and stability are the true foundations of sustainable development, arguing that prosperity can only thrive in societies secured against threats. He highlighted that global conflicts underscore the critical importance of achieving peace.
Commitment Against Terrorism and Military Resolve
Sharif acknowledged that Pakistan has repeatedly faced acts of aggression that undermine peace. However, he reaffirmed that the country’s armed forces have successfully foiled enemy designs through their “best professional performance.” The Prime Minister reiterated the nation’s commitment, stating that Pakistan will pay any price to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Threats from Afghan Soil and Bilateral Ties
While describing a peaceful and stable Afghanistan as the “key to regional connectivity, development, and prosperity,” he cautioned that extremist groups pose a threat to peace both inside Afghanistan and beyond its borders.
He brought attention to recent security incidents:
- An unprovoked aggression on the eastern border was carried out in May this year.
- Last month, Pakistani posts were attacked from Afghan soil, which were met with a firm and decisive response.
- The Foreign Office confirmed that Pakistan’s offers for dialogue have not received a practical response from Afghanistan.
He praised the efforts of brotherly countries supporting dialogue between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban but stressed the need for practical steps on the ground.
Focus on Economic Stability
In addition to regional security, the Prime Minister spoke about domestic stability, noting that his government has initiated comprehensive economic reforms. His focus remains on ensuring sustainable development, strengthening institutions, empowering women and youth, and creating employment opportunities through the promotion of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The international conference, attended by delegations from countries like Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kenya, Palestine, and Morocco, aims to strengthen global peace and parliamentary cooperation.
