Following the conclusion of the first day’s play in the Rawalpindi Test, Pakistan’s opening batsman Abdullah Shafique shared his assessment of the pitch, noting it presented a familiar challenge. Speaking to the media, Shafique stated that the wicket in Rawalpindi is “not different” from the one used in the Lahore match.
While the pitch itself felt similar, Shafique did point out a subtle but important distinction between the two venues. “The outfield at Rawalpindi Stadium is slower compared to Lahore,” he remarked, suggesting that run-scoring might require more effort.
Reflecting on the ebb and flow of the game, Shafique addressed the issue of fielding errors with a pragmatic view. “Dropping catches during a match is part of the game,” he said. He also acknowledged the difficulties batsmen face on turning tracks, emphasizing his dedicated preparation. “Spin pitches are challenging for batsmen, and I have worked hard in the nets for it.”
The opening batsman highlighted that experience is key to mastering conditions, stating, “The more you bat, the more you understand the pitch.”
Shafique also offered insight into the team’s supportive environment, revealing that he turns to senior players for guidance, especially during tough times. “During periods of bad performance, I spoke about cricket with Shan Masood and Babar Azam,” he shared. “Both senior players gave me a lot of tips during the camp.”
He stressed the team’s commitment to continuous improvement, even in victory. “Even after winning a match, the team management and players discuss our flaws.” Shafique concluded on a lighter note, admitting that the team has “been lucky with the toss in both test matches.”
