Queen Camilla is set to be sworn in as a member of the King’s Privy Council for Canada during the royal couple’s upcoming visit to the country. Quoting senior government officials, cbc.ca reported that this swearing-in allows the Queen to provide formal advice to King Charles in his capacity as the King of Canada, and once sworn in, she retains lifelong membership.
King Charles will attend Canada’s state opening of parliament in Ottawa, a clear demonstration of support for the former British colony, of which he remains the head of state. According to Buckingham Palace, Charles, accompanied by his wife Queen Camilla, will visit Canada from May 26 to May 27.
The monarch’s attendance follows his recent acknowledgment that he is also the King of Canada, a country that U.S. President Donald Trump has clearly expressed intentions regarding. The visit to Canada will mark Charles’s second overseas trip this year, succeeding his visit to Italy where he held a private meeting with Pope Francis prior to the pontiff’s passing.
When King Charles III and Queen Camilla visit Canada later this month for the monarch’s reading of the speech from the throne, it will initiate two days of grand ceremony and tradition across the capital. The King’s visit will be the third occasion a British and Canadian monarch has read the speech from the throne in Canada, with Queen Elizabeth II having delivered it in 1957 and 1977.
