Two earthquakes have sparked concern off the coast of the US state of Oregon, striking near a volatile active undersea volcano.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that two quakes, measuring 4.8 and 5.4 in magnitude, were recorded on Wednesday morning. The tremors occurred about 100 miles from the “Axial Seamount.”
This underwater volcano is located 300 miles off the Oregon coast and sits more than 4,900 feet below the sea surface.
According to reports, the two earthquakes occurred just 18 minutes apart. While no tsunami warning was issued by authorities, researchers who study the volcano have issued a warning.
Scientists cautioned that this seismic activity could mean the volcano, which last erupted in 2015, is now “even closer” to a new eruption.
